Capannini was originally owned but the Viti family, who have farmed land and owned property in a and around the nearby village of Mazzolla for many hundreds of years.

In the 19th Century, Benedetto Guiseppe Viti was an alabaster merchant who travelled the world selling his wares, opening shops and taking part in fairs and auctions. he purchased the sixteenth century Incontri-Viti Palazzo in Volterra in 1850, which the family converted into a museum celebrating the art and history of alabaster.
