Die 13.169 Einwohner des Sestiere verteilen sich auf die Pfarren San Giobbe e Bernardino (mit Opera Pia Contarini), San Marcuola (mit Santa Fosca), Madonna dell’Orto (mit San Marziale, Ospedale Fatebenefratelli und Casa Card. Piazza), Sant’Alvise (mit San Bonaventura (Carmelitane) und Canossiane), San Girolamo (mit Santa Maria Madre del Redentore und Ist. Suore Dorotee), San Felice (mit Santa Sofia), Santi Apostoli (mit Gesuiti) und San Canciano (mit San Giovanni Crisostomo und Santa Maria dei Miracoli). Cannaregio liegt im Nordwesten von Venedig und wird von der flächenmäßigen Ausdehnung nur noch von Castello übertroffen. Der Name leitet sich angeblich vom Zustand des Sestiere ab, den es vor der Besiedlung hatte, als es sich noch um ein versumpftes Gebiet handelte, in dem Schilfrohr wuchs.

Il sestiere di Cannaregio è il secondo sestiere più esteso di Venezia dopo Castello ed è il più popolato (occupa quasi per intero tutta la parte della città a nord del Canal Grande, estendendosi dalla stazione ferroviaria fino a Castello).
In questo sestiere si trova il Ghetto di Venezia raggiungibile da un "sotopòrtego" posto ai piedi del Ponte delle Guglie, su cui sono ancora ben visibili i cardini in ferro delle porte che anticamente chiudevano il Ghetto durante la notte.
L'arteria principale dell'intero sestiere è l'ampio percorso stradale che porta dalla stazione di Santa Lucia a Rialto, tradizionalmente conosciuto con la denominazione di Strada Nova. Questo tragitto di circa 25 minuti comincia ai piedi del Ponte degli Scalzi (lato Canal Grande) e della chiesa di Santa Maria degli Scalzi e termina in Campo dei Santi Apostoli.
Nel corso del XIX secolo in questo sestiere si realizzò sotto dominazione asburgica il primo collegamento terrestre tra Venezia e la terraferma, con la costruzione della stazione di Santa Lucia come punto d'arrivo del ponte ferroviario tra Mestre e Venezia. In conseguenza di questo, nel 1858 venne eretto il terzo ponte sul Canal Grande, il Ponte degli Scalzi, proprio in corrispondenza della stazione ferroviaria.
All'estremo nord di Cannaregio e di Venezia, fra il Ghetto di Venezia, la chiesa di Sant'Alvise e la chiesa della Madonna dell'Orto si trovano lunghe fondamente ricche di locali giovanili.
Oltre alle succitate chiese, sono degne di rilievo anche la chiesa di Santa Maria dei Miracoli, posta all'estremo sud del sestiere e primo esempio di chiesa rinascimentale a Venezia, la chiesa dei Santi Apostoli e la chiesa dei Gesuiti (Santa Maria Assunta).

Cannaregio est le plus septentrional des six sestieri de Venise. C'est sur ce sestiere qu'arrive le pont de la Liberté qui relie la ville au continent et le pont des Lagunes du chemin de fer. Cannaregio est délimité au nord par la lagune, jusqu'au canal des Mendiants. La limite avec le sestiere de Castello est déterminée par ce canal vers le sud jusqu'au rio de Santa Marina. Se dirigeant vers l'ouest, la limite suit alors ce dernier canal, puis le rio de San Lio et le rio del Fontego dei Tedeschi, qui le sépare du sestiere de San Marco, jusqu'au Grand Canal. La grande voie d'eau sert de limite avec les sestieri de San Polo et de Santa Croce. Le canal principal est le canal de Cannaregio qui relie le Grand Canal, à la hauteur de l'église San Geremia, avec la lagune. Deux ponts franchissent ce canal: le Ponte delle Guglie dont les quatre angles sont décorées d'obélisques, d'où son nom, et le Ponte dei Tre Archi. Cette dernière construction à trois arches est l'unique pont de ce style à Venise.
